Business Insights:
Tax season is a busy time for business owners and unfortunately, scammers know it too. They’ll try anything to trick you into handing over personal or financial information. Stay alert and protect yourself from fraud by watching out for these common tax scams:
Fake emails or calls claiming to be from the IRS demanding payment
Phishing emails asking for personal or banking details
Promises of huge tax refunds in exchange for sensitive information
Fake tax preparers offering to file on your behalf but stealing your data
Threatening messages claiming you owe back taxes and must pay immediately
Keep in mind, the IRS will never ask for payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. Instead, they send official notices by mail before taking any collection action.
Payments should only be made through the IRS website, direct bank transfers, or authorized payment processors. They also allow you to question or appeal any amount owed and will never threaten arrest or legal action over the phone. If you receive a suspicious message demanding immediate payment, it’s likely a scam. Always verify directly with the IRS at irs.gov before taking any action.
